Here’s a little something I made last night and today, for my roommate’s daughter. She picked out the felt and the embroidery floss for the stitching, and I followed this wonderful pattern, and… Dragon!
I admit I was skeptical at first when she picked out the black glittery felt (while our contributor Jessica says one can’t have enough glitter, I myself am allergic to it and break out in cringes). I wanted to try to encourage something more rustic, more “period plausible”, but then I figured, what the heck, it’s for a fantasy LARP and I should pick my battles more carefully. I picked out some screwback doll eyes while we were at it. And, well, I’m delighted with the result.
More importantly, so is my roommate’s daughter! It’s something she can enjoy both in-game and out, and I am of the opinion that every maiden should have a guardian dragon.
I made two minor changes to the pattern. First, I did two wing pieces of color A and 2 of color B, and stitched the pieces together so that color B was the inner wing color. This made for sturdier wings with a cool two-color effect. Second, I made “inner” ears with color B.
I almost don’t trust how inexpensive this was to make, and how it only took me maybe 4-6 hours of total hand-stitching to make it happen.
- Felt cost: $1.98 (because she got the fancy glittery kind)
- Eyes: $1.99 for a pack of 6 (I used– you guessed it– two)
- Embroidery Floss: $1.39 (I used maybe half)
- Stuffing: I already had it at home, used maybe 1/8 of a 12-ounce bag?
- Labor: 4-6 hours
Totally worth every penny and every minute, to see the reaction on the kid’s face. She told me I should make a Nature elemental one for myself… perhaps I will, even though I’m no longer a maiden. 😉
